Cyclone enclosure for home theater

Post by dedlyjedly »

Several months back I constructed an enclosure for my Cyclone. The enclosure is a beast and internal volume is about 4.75 cubic feet after recessing in a cavity for the plate amp that will power the sub and accounting for bracing. The box is made out of 3/4" MDF. I picked the Cyclone and size of enclosure to complement a Definitive Technology SuperCube II in my home theater. I have yet to decide how I want to finish stands for the box as it will be down-firing when completed in order to keep any dust from collecting in the Cyclone's vanes. I also didn't finish the cosmetic trim to the exterior of the box yet as it's now sitting in storage due to a move. Any suggestions on a method or type of piano gloss black laminate or other finishing touches are more than welcome.

This pic shows the internal bracing that I churned out on the router table.

Top on and adding polyfil and preparing to add the amp enclosure.

Amp enclosure mounted and wiring sealed into place.

Polyfil lining carefully stapled to the walls to prevent it from getting sucked into the cyclone.

T-nuts in place and reinforced with two part CA. Nothing quite as frustrating as having one break free on you!

Backside of box in place and Bash plate amp mounted in cavity.

Cyclone mounted to sub baffle. Both bottom and top of box were double layers of MDF making this enclosure an absolute tank!

Bust out the router, round over all edges, primer, primer, primer, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, wet sand.

I would go with charcoal, not black, add a bit of sparkle or pearl to it.
I think we've established that "Ka Ka" and "Tukki Tukki" don't work.

What else can I say than... WOW!
Really like it. [did your neighbours enjoyed you fraising the bracing, just like mine? ]...
When I was thinking about a nice sub-to-build, a cyclone also crossed my mind.
Unfortunately they are extremely rare here as well
Otherwise I'd also have ended up using one.
I'm anxious to hear from you, how it sounds, but having a sub that is designed to handle the lowest notes in the audio-spectrum, and seeing those pics of the enclosure.. hhmmm; can't go wrong IMO. :D
Very nice project indeed.
keep us posted here!

Thanks for the compliments guys! And I really appreciate all your input.

I really look forward to finishing this project off, but unfortunately it will have to wait for a little while. I originally wanted to do a gloss black laminate, in large part to match my existing Definitive Technology equipment, but primarily to avoid the tedious process of painting MDF! I was just planning on adhering the laminate and then using a flush trim bit, but I'm sure there are tricks of the trade to produce the nicest seams at the corners. Have any of you done anything that way? I'll likely end up going the route Errin suggested as I think overall it will look better, I'm likely to change out the rest of the equipment, and we've all seen the ugly wear and tear on laminate that's unavoidable over time. Nonetheless, I'm still curious if anyone has experimented.

As far as sound of this sub and enclosure I was very impressed. I didn't have the time to properly integrate it into the rest of my theater, but did perform some sine sweeps to test it out. As expected the bass extension is incredible! Cyclones are obviously a different beast and at first I was frustrated with noise produced by the flapping vanes. But I found I was simply overdriving it in an attempt to realize a perceived value in my new toy that I really shouldn't have been. We all know that really low frequency response has absolutely nothing to do with amplitude, but now I can testify that truly deep will surprise you nonetheless! After some A/B comparison I finally realized the subtle beauty of the Cyclone. While I wish I had the opportunity to actually demo it along with my other sub I've got some processing issues to work out in addition to the hours of listening it will take to level match and properly balance the frequency response of both drivers simultaneously.

So now all I need is a new living room and workshop to bring all the loose ends together.

Can someone please get a video of a cyclone in action?

15 years and I have never seen one in action, something I would badly love to see :)

What tools would one need, in order to build boxes like this? I hate buying prefabs, and if I could teach myself how to do boxes this nice, I would be in heaven.

Or maybe I should skip it and go to fiberglassing... only thing I need then is a ring for the sub.

Routers! It's my favorite tool. The routers themselves are the cheep part though. It's the bits that can get expensive.

Exactly my point. I could skip the woodworking and go straight to full fiberglass enclosures.

The only fiberglassing I have done was this, but it seemed pretty easy to do.
